I have a Bally machine in my basement from 1975-ish. It's still playable, but it doesn't score consistently. (Hit a target and nothing is added to the score.) Sometimes the scoring reels don't reset to zero when starting a new game.
I was wondering if anyone around here knows how to work on these things. I've opened the thing and looked around, but I wouldn't know where to begin.
It's a pretty common machine celebrating 'merica's bicentennial. It would be neat to get it running in time to countdown to our nation's 250th in 2026. I ain't in no hurry.

I kno a pretty hott tech, but he's a little pre-occupied traveling to Moline Illinois in a rented out Uhaul to pick up a Daytona 500 racing machine to bring back to add to our arcade... I am sure he will be happy to answer your tech question tonight.
Does the pinball machine you have have a name??!? Is it Evil Kaneeval??

Hi, I'm the one involved with fixing up the machines at Dumb. Unfortunately I don't offer to work on other people's machines as it's hard enough finding the time to keep my own fixed up. I have a backlog of things at the moment and we haven't even officially opened the arcade yet.
I have learned how to work on games with lots of googling and youtube videos. If you start by googling your game and the issue it's having, you'll probably find forums and things from other people who have experienced the same thing or similar. Usually Pinside.com forums is where i find a lot of good tips.
I have less experience working on EM games like the one you're describing. Finding the source of your issue on those is pretty different than newer digital machines and sometimes can be hard to trace with all the wires, relays, etc.
Doing a quick search, I found this discussion that sounds similar to what you're describing, hope it helps, https://www.reddit.com/r/pinball/comments/1uqllo/1976_bally_freedom_em_player_3_score_wont_reset/
One thing is for sure that once you've fixed this issue and had the game for a while longer, another problem is bound to happen. With these old electronics, it's pretty unavoidable and is just part of owning a pinball machine, imo.

Thank you, sir. A few years back I put new rubbers on all the bumpers and got it so we could t least play it every once in a while, just no more tracking personal bests. It's been in the family since I was an infant. Someday, I'll take a stab at the electronics. share.icloud.com/photos/0ixQFW80OdvNcxEIRKtb9l31Q#Springfield
