sorry guys, I'm still tearin' up thinking about missing the fair right around now this year. thought I would start a thread as a little tribute. We all miss the butter cow, but what else do you miss? What is your favorite fried fair food you ever had at the fair? mine is chocolate fried cow tongue. Favorite grandstand act you have ever seen at the fair? What grandstand acts you think they were going to have play that they didn't even get to announce yet? Who do you think will be at the grandstand next year? Do you think they will have a fair next year? faovirte other part of the fair? what is your favorite hut at the ethnic village? what is your favorite ride? does anybody want to sneak in and go down the slide tonight?

Hope you all had a good time at the fair this year!!! I know I did. Even though I have been not in Illinois, I have been traveling around Utah and California this whole time. Something I forgot to mention when I posted this year's buttercow picture - this year is actually the 100th ILLINOIS STATE FAIR BUTTERCOW.
The very first Illinois State Fair Buttercow was in 1922! (Not sure if there was a buttercow last year since the fair was canceled, but I think there was because how else would this be #100? There are no photos of the very first one, but this is the earliest buttercow photo I could find from 1953:

I had a great time at the fair thanks to the butter cow. This year they made a lady hugging the butter cow. I think that was nice because with everything going on lately we all need a big ol butter hug

I thought that woman's skirt next to the butter cow were a gigantic pair of baggy shorts, and looking at them closer, they just might be. More room to hide some butter in.

Are we all ready for another State Fair this year? (a little later in the summer, I know)
just wanted to share the info that the FREE CONCERT at the Grandstand this year is Monday, August 15th and it is this 60's / 70's Chicago-sounding rock group:
Heck, I'll be there!
This was their hit:
And then Willie Nelson is playing the next night.
State Fair trivia question: how many times has Willie played our State Fair and when was the last time??
My dad says he is going to see Sammy Hagar & The Circle on whatever night. Sorry Gary but I'd rather see IDES OF MARCH or WILLIE NELSON if I had to pick one night.

a co-worker works for the ABC Club (the staff the Grandstand). He sent me a PDF of every line up of grandstand shows that go back decades.

Maybe a dumb question, but was 1979 the first year for the Illinois State Fair Grandstand as we know it? Is that the year the current building was constructed?
And of course, aside from TRACTOR PULLS, looks like WILLIE NELSON has been the most consistent act at our state fair throughout the years!
I haven't had the time to look over every year just yet, looks like a whole lotta big country acts throughout the years and ever year has at least one big act I would be slightly interested in seeing... one big one that stands out is the B-52's and VIOLENT FEMMES in 1991, but that one I also recently found out about (thanks to Benny's post towards the top of this thread)
