September 17th, 2005 FIFTEEN YEARS AGO, The Black Sheep Cafe had it's very first show. I wasn't there but maybe a couple of you were.
Remembering all of those black boogers that came from many shows with that dirty dusty old carpet today.

i feel like i missed the golden era of music in springfield. my only show i got to attend was Looming's last show there. i just went with my friend because he said looming was good. plus i'd been wanting to check out the black sheep for awhile. looming was so awesome! show was so killer. the atmosphere was fun. i wish i could make it over to springfield more often. hopefully i can move a little closer next year.

I wish there were pictures from the first show. I do remember it starting around 2:30-3pm and going until midnight or something. Everyone set up and played on the left side (Facing west). No AC for all of year one and year two. A young Brian Galecki , Cory Van Meter, Jeff Brown, and Alex Nelson were there. A lot of other kids of yesteryear were too.

I think it always goes in cycles. What was someone’s golden age wasn’t necessarily someone else’s. I think the lesson the Black Sheep taught was that it is really up to motivated people to make a music scene happen. Dumb continues that legacy and there will be other great scenes in the future. You’ll be able to see cool stuff for sure.

I think I started going to Black Sheep in 2008 or 2009. I got to see a lot of really cool bands play over the years. I guess my favorite was AJJ because they’re one of my favorite bands overall. I think they actually played at Black Sheep twice! Seeing bands like The Copyrights and Teenage Bottlerocket was also awesome. There is also a special place in my heart for DMWW. Seeing them over in the skatepark was great. I met a lot of cool people that helped run Black Sheep and who also introduced me to cool pizza places in Springfield. Even though I haven’t visited in years, I will always love Black Sheep!

My first show at black sheep was in fall 2014. there was a lot of food out which i thought was cool. I will say i had thoughts of the food being spiked with drugs at first idk 15 y/o me moving to a town i didnt know plus the first impressions of the parking lot and scary looking people had me on edge. I think the same show someone came outside squealing with a saxophone which i thought was really funny. Some of the bands i remember were estates looming lume diaper rash and i think it mightve been pryss? They had an elliptical and directional cards. I got the MOSH! one if i can find it ill post it in the artifact thread. Also had my first snowball fight there. It was lots of fun and im glad to have supported that venue.

I think my first time at Black Sheep was playing a weekend of shows with Obi Wan. I thought the Black Sheep was rad, Springfield's true diy all ages venue. Our diy venue in Peoria, The Bricks, that wasn't a house, or some kind of vfw, church, ect but a dedicated space only for shows, had gone under two years before . Brian G was drinking a red juice looking drink and I asked him where he got that and he said The Black Sheep Cafe. So I looked for a place to find a juice but, I was made a fool that day. . kevin was there ever an intention for there to be food or drinks there?

The first few months we had drip coffee, burritos, and chips. The others who started it with me really missed The Asylum, which was a local all ages spot that was a coffee house that did shows. They kind of had that idea in mind when we started. When the other owners quit in year one I decided to just make it about shows exclusively. I used to buy soda on sale at Schnucks and bottled water. Thats about as fancy as we got. The “Cafe” part stuck I guess.

My first BXS experience was Black Sheep Fest 2012. My friend and I were standing on the benches and she got a fist to the face during Pound for Pound so we had to leave. I couldn't find any indie folk bands on the lineup anyway.
Fast forward to the last BXS show and I actually was in the pit for the first time ever for Soap Scum. I almost felt punk and I don't listen to Mumford and sons anymore.

Okay whoops, today (the 17th) is the actual Black Sheep's 16th birthday. Golden Birthday isn't until next year, false alarm. Black Sheep can still drive though. Many gems were recovered at the nursing home with granpa kevin last night. Here's just one of them (2005):
