Those are helpful links Brian! I didn't see this initially, but on my own search for FISH TALES tips I found that first tutorial video. Can you belive that he suggests [REDACTED]? Crazy.
Also, that guy has a blog called Tilt Warning. I wonder if he'd be interested in talking to da TILT WARNING band

Pinsters, I wanted to take the time to write out my approach to scoring big on Fish Tales pinball (1992 Williams™):
Fish Tales pinball is a fast paced game. Some of you might interpret this as the game being "hard". The way I look at it is that it is nice that to get a very high score, you don't need a 30 minute+ game. You can break 100 million in 10 minutes or less if you hit those shots. There are a number of ways to rack up the points big in Fish Tales, IMO. Here are some of those ways:
- all of the "pros" seem to go straight for the boat ramps to get to the MONSTER FISH, so Jeff tells me anyways. If you've played Fish Tales just once you may have figured this one out already. Sometimes you hit those boat ramps back-to-back-to-back and it feels real good. Hitting six of those lights the monster fish. Each time you hit the boat ramps it gives you more points too. Starting with 500K, then 1 million, and up to 3 million. So after 6 ramps, you've got yourself 10.5 million as it is (not bad). Then if you hit monster fish right away by hitting the left loop right after that, you get another 20 million plus a random fish-finder bonus. My problem is I can never hit that monster fish right away, and if I do, the timed score has gone down to only 5 million.
- the good thing about fishtales is if you are not hitting those ramps, chances are the ball is all bouncing around and hitting the little fishy targets on the sides. especially if your ball is going bouncy-bounce on the bumpers, chances are you are hitting those fishy targets a bunch, and if you hit them all you "catch" a fish or something. (this makes big mouth billy bass up top do his dance). This is good. The thing is, if you do this four times, you light FEEDING FRENZY. When that is activated, there are flashing fishies on all of the loops and ramps and you have the chance to really start racking up points (5 million every time you hit a lit ramp or loop). You can earn up to 35 million in FEEDING FRENZY.
- I like to pay attention to that CAPTIVE BALL right smack dab in the middle of the game. Understanding what is going on with that ball is key to activating VIDEO MODE in this game, which is CRUCIAL, IMO (I'd say maybe even more than MONSTER FISH). So you don't advance that captive ball to the next level just by hitting it. No, hitting it gives you whatever award is lit at the time, plus some million points (which is also great). You advance that captive ball to the next level by hitting the right "long cast" loop whenever THAT is lit. And you get THAT to be lit by hitting the... right boat ramp I guess. It also starts out lit. So first level is "hold bonus" (who cares about that one), and the next one is VIDEO MODE. The next one is ROCK THE BOAT (CRUCIAL), the next one is EXTRA BALL LIT, and the next one is INSTANT MULTIBALL.
- Okay a couple of crucial things come out of that Captive ball ordeal, and the first is the second level which is VIDEO MODE. This is supposed to be the best video mode in pinball. You are shooting boats and jet skiiers in the back by hitting the flipper or cast button. The boats in the very back are worth the most points, and if you are doing well enough (which you should be), you get a shot at an EXTRA BALL that moves in the back towards the end of this mode. If you are good enough at Video Mode, it's a pretty much guaranteed EXTRA BALL and 30 million points or more every time. One time I got 43 million on this mode. Pretty much every time I complete the mode I get that fishy fish playing the drums and then the REPLAY! (that's how you know you are getting good points).
- Getting that captive ball to the third level is also crucial because it lights ROCK THE BOAT. As the TOP BOAT ROCKER on this forum, I can tell you rocking the boat is a good thing to do. Every time you rock that boat under this mode you get 10 million points. You rock the boat by hitting the captive ball or hitting boat ramps. So if you can get that good back-to-back-to-back boat ramp shots, you are golden. I think my TOP BOAT ROCKER run was 7 boat rocks so 70,000,000 (nice).
- The one other way to really rack up the points of course (as far as I know at least) is by getting that JACKPOT. This however, is not nearly as easy as the methods listed above, and I will go over JACKPOTS for this game in another post. For now though, try to focus on those 4 or 5 methods listed above! If you can get that MONSTER FISH, activate VIDEO MODE, ROCK THE BOAT, and FEEDING FRENZY all in the same game, that is pretty much a guaranteed 100,000,000 score (which is the current high score). And it is a fast game, so you can keep trying! Good luck out there young guppies

Got a score of 150,000,000+ last night (my new highest for the contest). I didn't even get any monster fish. But I think this was the first game where I kept advancing that captive ball through all of the levels, to where it RESET and started back at level one. So now I know that happens when you reach the top. What really did it for me on that game is that I got the MULTI-BALL and then immediately activated ROCK THE BOAT, so I was rockin' that boat like no other with my three balls. And then as I was rockin' that boat I kept on advancing that captive ball, got the extra ball, and then activated the "INSTANT MULTIBALL" as I already had a multi-ball going (so that just gave me back one of the balls that had drained in my multi-ball). (this sounds confusing and I didn't fully understand what had happen until I thought about it while lying in bed last night). When I was hitting that captive ball while it was on the last level, I think it was giving me a ton of points and there was a screen popping up kind of like getting to the treasure room in medieval madness.
Boy I really got to update the contest chart today.

In case you all forgot we still have FISH TALES, last night I rebuilt the flippers so they're now super strong and snappy! I know Wilson was telling me the left flipper was feeling weak and after that I started noticing it too. I also replaced the lightning flipper bats (1/8 shorter) with standard flippers, so now it's going to feel quite a bit different, hopefully easier and more fun.

Reporting back in to say the game is definitely easier with the standard flippers, but that left flapper is still weak. Poor lil guy still can't make the ball go up the ramp. I believe in you little flip flap

I believe in you little flip flap well great, I guess I could try replacing the flipper coil. Usually that's not the problem but I've replaced everything else.

Oh yes you know it feels good to get a NEW HIGH SCORE on a pinball, and Fish Tales feels oh so good to play with the new long and hard hitting flappers on there. I'm leaving my original high lightning flipper score on Pinside (173 million) and putting this new one on. Oh I guess I'll add to my forum tagline too...
