Okay forum gang, today's featured game of the week is QIX II (1982)
(GAME #29 ON THE GALAGA CABINET)
Okay how fun!! We all know and love QIX. It was one of the first arcade games that we all loved in our arcade. Especially people like Mario who love shapes and math. Do I need to explain the game again??
Okay, you are the moving dot that is stuck to the outside border of the "playfield". The "qix" (pronounced "quicks" is that funky 90's screensaver looking shape that is moving around every whichway in the middle. the Qix is unpredictable and you have to be careful. when you hold down one of two buttons on the machine you are able to move your dot to break free from the border and create shapes - but be careful - the qix can touch your new line you have made and that is how you die. then you got these little "sparkys" that pop up from the top and travel the border of the playfield, and you can't be on the border when they come for you. there are more "sparkys" that pop out into the game the longer you play, so you have to move quick.
one shape-making button makes you make shapes fast, and the other one slow. the fast button one your shapes are worth less points. the slow button makes your shapes dark red, and they are worth a lot of points. so you almost want to build up your fast shapes and make them small (or long and skinny), so you can use your slow shape making button and plop a big dark red shape at the right time to get a lot of points. (this is better if you were just playing, you would understand better).
You get to move on to the next level when your playfield is 75% filled. you get bonus points for completing levels when they are over the 75% required.
WHAT"S DIFFERENT ABOUT QiX II
? That is what we are all wondering. Well, now that I have played it I will tell you:
- the QIX is more colorful apparently
- I don't remember it showing all of those %% numbers at the top of the original QIX. (surely it keeps track of how much % you have filled though). maybe I will report back on this one.
- okay QIX II is actually HARDER in that you only have THREE LIVES in the game. for original QIX I wanna say we had like SIX!!! uh, that hard!
- BUT, the thing about QIX II is that if you complete a level with 90% filled, you get an EXTRA LIFE. so I guess you gotta take advantage of that!!!
okay my initial few times playing this game I got 45,804 as my high score right now! The leaderboard was just ten spots of 30,000, so that is what you gotta beat to get on there for the most part!
GOOD LUCK, FORUM QIXERS
