If you're a show watcher like me then you know the drill. You put the kids to bed starting around 7:30. The 2 year old needs encouraged to go potty, changed into a night time diaper and PJs. The 8 year old needs told repeatedly what to do and threaten taking away phone and TV until he finally does everything and then you read a book together for 15 mins for school credit. Then You spend the next half hour reading to the 8yo while he falls asleep so he doesn't have an episode where he gets so afraid of zombies that he throws up. Meanwhile the 2yo is getting rocked to sleep by Mom. (of course if it's a bath night then start earlier and run through the steps for everyone to take their bath). If you can get all this done by 9:30, then it's time to watch a Show! But no more than 40 mins or else Mom will be up too late! She has to get up early and deal with the kids who are always wanting to get out of bed at the crack of dawn. To start off this series I wanted to talk about a show we watched recently on HBO Max ![]() Our Flag Means Death is a pretty funny show that was not at all on my radar. I wouldn't say any of it was laugh out loud but it was all very humorous. Cat sold it to me when she explained that it starred "Murray" the band manager from Flight of the Conchords, except now he is a pirate captain. And that's pretty much what this show is. All kinds of silly things happen that are contrary to pirating and then things really heat up when they meet up with Blackbeard and the show definitely goes in many wacky directions from there. Also just like Conchords, there are a ton of cameos from different well known comedians and SNL alumns, although usually those characters are playing such minor roles that they don't really get a chance to do anything memorable. I will say that I'm not really up on who the up and coming comedians are anyway, so there are probably a lot more that I didn't even notice. You can definitely tell the writing for this show is probably by a bunch of millennials as this is definitely a show that wouldn't have existed 5 years ago. I suppose I'm usually watching old shows and movies, or marvel, star trek, and star wars stuff that I haven't noticed the passage of time as much. I'm looking forward to the next season for sure. I suppose it makes sense this might make an impression on me since it's about a guy leading a comfortable boring life doing everything he was supposed to do and then abandons it to do something completely different and risky.

I threw this on on a whim and one of my first thoughts was "is that Murray?" I haven't finished the season yet, but I do really enjoy it. I bet if they get a second season they'll find their stride even more.

I guess this thread is gonna be mostly shows and not movies, hope that's ok. Although we have watched movies, just has to broken up over 2 or 3 nights. Here's another one we just finished on Hulu, at least for the 1st season. I see it's been renewed ![]() Reservation DogsAs far as I can tell this has been produced with the consent of indigenous people and is intended to poke fun of rez life while also giving a fairly accurate portrayal with obvious parody. It was entertaining and humorous. I enjoyed all the side characters. It centers around kids who are bored and have little hope for their future and of course get into shenanigans. It's nice to see how everyone is treated as a pretty complex character. There are some pretty big emotional moments and of course the spirit guide parts are pretty funny, and it makes me hungry for catfish, and I had to look up what backstrap is. I'm looking forward to the next season. I'm not sure how a 2nd season will work after the 1st season finale, we shall see. There was also a lot of cussing.

We just started watching the latest Star Trek show on Paramount+ so I thought I should probably remember back to the first Star Trek show we watched on that service, which is Picard. I've really been enjoying all these Star Trek shows, they're so neat! I enjoy all the Star Wars shows too, but if your really want a more gentlemanly and refined sci fi show, then this is a great time to be alive Picard was the main reason I first started subscribing to Paramount+ as I had ran out of the last show we were watching and this was the next exciting thing at the time. I will say Star Trek TNG is my favorite TV show of all time. It's one of the very few shows I've gone back and rewatched, which I have probably seen every episode at least 3 times. Although I can't just rattle off episode titles based off a single scene like some people can. Of course the older I get the more it becomes a 90s retro future, which just makes me like it more. I love the carpeted fixtures and the 90s color inspirations and the types of issues they're attempting to address as well as inspirations for different episodes. I think it would be hard to appreciate Picard without already watching TNG as there are so many call backs as well as reprised characters. They even bring characters from the other 90s series such as Voyager! probably about 5 or so years before the new wave of Star Trek shows, we were at a crossroads with the Star Trek universe. The last 3 movies shot canon in the face by just rebooting the whole universe and changing the whole timeline, so going forward from that we had no idea if Star Trek would continue in this Reboot universe and if all content from the 90s Star Trek shows was just erased. Well it seems Paramount has answered that by just kind of ignoring the whole reboot universe and treating it as another parallel universe, which I'm ok with. Of course we Trekkies knew all about parallel universes since the 60s when we saw Spock with a goatee. Now everyone else is getting in on it. We also knew from TNG there are multiple universes with infinite possibilities, thinking of that one episode when all the Enterprises start showing up all at once and one had a very disheveled Riker. Anyway, the first season of Picard was pretty good. Picard basically yanked out of retirement to help save the whole universe once again, only this time he has to pull together a rag tag band instead of a proper ship and crew. Also there are various advancements in technology to play around with and oh a Borg cube? It is fun seeing all the cameos of all our favorite characters being old as well as one that was supposed to be dead. The second season was not as good as the first imo. It started off great, oh hi Q! But then it just kind of fell apart. Picard was dealing with an internal struggle that just seemed really shoehorned in to ramp up the drama as well as everyone dealing with the new reality Q had thrown them into. I was really ready for this season to end when it did and of course we got a cameo of the Jar Jar Binks of Star Trek aka Wesley Crusher. I would take Barkley or even Lwaxana Troi over Wesley any day. I think we could have stopped after the first season and it would have been just fine. Sounds like there is a 3rd season coming however and maybe they can really bring it back? We'll see I might be getting harder on Picard because we watched Discovery after the first season of Picard, and that is a good show, I'll have to talk about that next.

We have been watching the latest season of Picard. I'll say Season 2 really went off the rails. It was seemed like a good idea to go on another Q adventure, but the adventure really wasn't very good. It's much more fun having a game of wits with Q when he has all his powers and is up to his usual antics.
The newest season is exactly what I think everyone wanted for a Next Generation victory lap. I just watched the second to last episode where the ship everyone wants to see gets revealed, so I have yet to see what happens in the big finale. I wonder if they all die and then that's the end, don't know yet. It is kind of silly how many characters and big bads they packed into one season, and the bad thing that happens where they are all protected by being old, classic star trek silliness.
